on CAREER GUIDANCE SESSION FOR BHU STUDENTS IN NEW DELHI The session was attended by 40 students. With 25 participants, FMS-BHU students made their presence felt strongly. There were 8 students from MPM&IR, Deptt. of Psychology and Dept of Political science. 7 non-BHU students also participated. In all, a total of 80 people participated in this programme, including senior BHU alumni and 21 BHUMAA Members. Inaugural Session The programme started at 6.30 in the evening with the traditional lighting of the lamp and floral tributes to Pt.Madan Mohan Malaviya-Ji by Shri K.N.Rai (Vice President, MMM, Delhi and NCR), Dr.Lallan Prasad (President, BHUAA, Delhi and NCR), Shri M.Abdul Mateen (National President, BHUMAA) and Shri B.S.Mathur, very senior BHU alumni-Vice President of MMM . This was followed by a very inspirational rendering of the BHU "kulgeet" by Deep Shikha, Priyanka Upadhyay, Madhumita and Rajiv Ranjan, all students of FMS, BHU. In his welcome address, Shri K.N.Rai emphasized upon the great importance of "Career Management" in today's world. He explained to the students how life is now like a marathon and the necessity of planning this race in advance in order to emerge a winner. Chalking out the various quality and skill requirements, he urged upon the students to create a winning desire in them and, at the same time, to simplify their lives. The students appreciated his guiding and motivating speech. In his address, Dr.L.Prasad stressed upon the role of integrity, morality and hard work in building a successful career as well as one's life. Shri M.A.Mateen, in his address, briefed participants on how this initiative had evolved and explained the objectives of the programme. He expressed the desire to see this initiative grow into a major platform for networking and a window to career opportunities for future BHU students. The technical part of the programme commenced after this vibrant inauguration. Speakers invited for the interactive session were all distinguished BHU alumni who had charted very successful careers for themselves in their chosen fields. Student participants welcomed these speakers with bouquets. Technical Session – I The eminent panelists in the first technical session were: 1. Shri U.K.Gupta, CMD, Holistik India Ltd.; 2. Shri Arvind Kumar Gupta, Advisor (WTO), Agricultural and Processed Food Export Development Authority, Government of India; 3. Shri B.D.Shah, CEO, Shah Jindal and Associates; 4. Shri S.P.Sharma, Vice President, IFCI Ltd.; 5. Shri Sarvesh Goorha, CEO, Auditel Inc; 6. Shri Sameer Kapoor, CEO, NDTV India. In his opening remarks, Shri U.K.Gupta gave an insight on entrepreneurship to the students and encouraged them to become entrepreneurs. After that, Shri Arvind Kumar Gupta described the opportunities in the agricultural sector and processed foods industry. He advised students to experiment fearlessly with opportunities and gave them invaluable suggestions on how to compete with their own selves to become highly successful in life. Thereafter, Shri B.D.Shah acquainted students with career opportunities available in power sector, infrastructure, and manufacturing and telecom industries. Then, Shri S.P.Sharma provided some insights on infrastructure and services financing and also gave an idea of the different business models adopted for the purpose. He advised students to enter the corporate world with complete zeal and enthusiasm. Next, in a lucid exposition, Shri Sarvesh Goorha talked about the tremendous opportunities in the fast growing IT sector and shared some of his vast experience in this industry. He emphasized upon the role of integrity and quality of work, and explained how these two have become the watch-word of all sectors and industries. The last speaker, Shri Sameer Kapoor asked students to be confident and optimistic in their work. He stressed upon the need for personality development and asked students to develop a hunger for learning, especially for things beyond their normal job requirements/responsibilities, so that that each year adds some value to their life. A question-answer session followed the introductory remarks by the above-mentioned speakers. . Panel members replied to all queries with patience and professional expertise. They advised students to 1. become sound conceptually and academically; 2. develop high-level competencies in working on computers and making powerpoint presentations; 3. develop their personality, particularly focusing on communication skills; 4. improve their work ethos; 5. generally raise their standard high enough to beat the competition in the job market; etc. etc. The question-answer session between the students and speakers as well as other senior alumni present in the audience was very interactive and fruitful. Technical Session – II In the second technical session, the experts' panel comprised of: 1.Shri Rajiv Sirohi, CEO, SHARA India & President, Exporters Association, Greater Noida; 2. Shri Rakesh Kohli, CEO, STAG International; 3.Shri M. A.Mateen, VP, British Paints Division, Berger Paints India Ltd.; 4. Shri Avinash Chaube, CEO, Business Resource Solution. The second session was devoted entirely to questions-answers and there were no preliminary remarks by the speakers. It was a very lively session with intense interaction between the students, panelists and other senior alumni. Many questions were raised and valuable inputs given from both sides. . In the course of discussions, the panelists also gave number of suggestions and advice to the students. Shri Sirohi gave the dictum of "no compromises on FREEDOM, FEAR and FOCUS" to the students. Shri Kohli advised students to make themselves more employable by gaining as much knowledge and competency as possible. Shri Mateen illustrated the varied corporate working environment with the example of requirement of different working capital in different companies, and advised finance students to do in-depth studies including Accounting Standards, IFRS compliant financial statements and other certification courses. Shri Avinash Chaube stressed upon the imperative of improving communication skills and gave valuable inputs for improving placements. Suggestions 1. To have a small information cell based in Malaviya Smriti Bhawan, New Delhi to help and guide BHU students on their first visit to Delhi for either summer or permanent placement. 2. To have a small informal panel of experts/professionals in Delhi to provide guidance and help in networking and placements. Concluding Session The eminent experts and professionals invited as panel speakers were each presented a memento as a token of appreciation by students of the current batch. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms.Sapna Kushwaha, MBA-student, FMS, BHU. Informal interactions among the participants continued thereafter over tea and refreshments.
